Dinner with Edward

Sometimes good things just fall right into your lap. I first heard about this book. dinner with Edward from a podcast that I listen to called The Simple Sophisticate. At the end of each of her podcasts she presents a petite plaisir ( little pleasure). When she described this story of weekly gourmet dinners between a charming widower and a newspaper reporter who was having marriage troubles I knew I should read it.

First I recommended it to my sister Linda who found it at her library and began to read it. When she told me how good it was I looked for it today when I went to the Okean library. I couldn't wait to get home and start it. It doesn't really give recipes except to tell you how the preparations are made for those delightful dinners. For instance here is Edward's Chicken...

Brine a roasting chicken for two days in apple cider and salt. Then rub with fresh thyme, rosemary and butter. Chop carrots, onions, and celery....a mirepoix..and spoon into parchment paper. Put the chicken on top and wrap all in a paper bag. Braise in the oven for hours. Just before removing heat the oven to 500 degrees and take off the paper to make the skin crispy and charred. Doesn't this sound yummy?

Here is a review from Bookpage. I highly recommend this. I've been waiting for a good book so I am thrilled to keep sitting here and turning pages.

When Isabel Vincent’s friend suggested that she have dinner with her recently widowed, 93-year-old father, Vincent was in need of a lift. She had just moved to New York City to take a job as an investigative reporter with the New York Post, and her marriage was falling apart.

“I don’t know if the temptation of a good meal did it for me, or if I was just so lonely that even the prospect of spending time with a depressed nonagenarian seemed appealing,” she writes, adding, “Whatever it was, I could never have imagined that meeting Edward would change my life.”

She chronicles their time together in the touching Dinner with Edward: A Story of an Unexpected Friendship, in which she not only rediscovers herself, but also realizes that this lonely geriatric is a charming poet at heart, full of wisdom about love and marriage.

A refined, self-taught intellectual and old-fashioned gentleman, Edward can also cook—as in really cook. Vincent begins each chapter with a menu, full of dishes like herb-roasted chicken in a paper bag (one of Edward’s many specialties), pan-fried potatoes with gruyère and his signature dessert, apple and pear galette (the secret to which is using crushed ice and lard, he insists). Two warnings: Don’t read this book on an empty stomach because the mouth-watering food descriptions will drive you mad, and don’t expect to find recipes.

As this unexpected friendship deepens, Edward becomes Vincent’s much-needed “fairy godfather,” cheerleader, sounding board and shoulder to cry on. He advises her to wear lots of lipstick and takes her to Saks to buy a pricey dress. He tells wonderful tales of his past, while Vincent confides her marriage woes, and later, after her divorce, shares stories of her new beaus.

Soon Vincent realizes, “Joy, happiness—it snuck up on me every time I saw Edward.” Readers will savor their every encounter and turn each page wishing they could have been there.

Kay

It is a sad day for me today. Last night my best friend Kay passed away. We were in the same homeroom in high school and became good friends. She was the maid of honor at my wedding. We have shared so much over the years and we talked on the phone every day. She will be so missed. Along with my other best friend Yrsa who passed away almost two years ago we three did everything together…celebrating our birthdays, luncheons, shopping, trips. I am feeling lost.

Celeron

lighthouse2

I had a chance to take some pictures while I was at Celeron. Lake Chautauqua is so beautiful any time of year and this little lighthouse was so picturesque. I used Photoshop to enhance it a little.

I just had to get a picture of this fellow. These were taken with my iphone which takes great photos. Don and I had a lovely day in Jamestown. We ate at the Olive Garden. I am still on weight watchers but since I have lost over eleven pounds last month I decided to treat myself. I had a salad with low fat dressing, just one small bite of the breadstick, garlic rosemary chicken (which was so delicious) and some mashed potatoes. Yummy! I was so full I didn’t need to eat dinner when we got home. Just had some Cream of Wheat and called it a day. We did a little shopping in Bon Ton, Michael’s and briefly went into TJMaxx but didn’t find anything. It was a cloudy but warm day and it was nice to have a day date with hubby.

Try not to panic, try not to panic

If you have your blog on blogspot you may know what I mean. My blog roll at the sidebar went POOF! and just disappeared. I panicked.  As you know I keep all the blogs I love right there beside my blog so I can read them every day. My favorite bloggers are there and I want to keep up with their latest posts. And now…gone, gone, gone! At first I thought it must have been something that I had done (of course…you know that has happened before.) So I googled it. What did we ever do before google? Is there any question that they don’t have the answer for? Anyhow, I was at first relieved to find out that I wasn’t the only one with that problem. It seems the problem is with Blogger, not me. All they can say is that they are working on it. It will be days, they say, but they can fix it..(they say) and restore the blogroll. Meanwhile I figured out a way to go back to an old cache of a post and get the blogroll from there. Whew! Meanwhile I owe you an apology for not showing up for a few days. It seems I am blogging by spurts now. When I have something to say..I blog. If not, I just go about my business. So if you visit and I’m not here, don’t worry. I’m just living my life.

LUCY

Do you love Lucy? Evidently most of the people who saw this statue in Celeron Park near Jamestown, NY did not.Jamestown is  famous for being the birthplace of Lucille Ball. There is even a museum there with memorabilia. Lucy was in the news because the residents of Celeron, a small suburb where she was born, protested the statue of her that is in the park. It really wasn't flattering and didn't resemble her at all.  Don and I saw it a few years ago since we frequently go to Jamestown which is about an hour from our house for shopping and dinner. When the statue was revealed it created quite a contoversy.

But yesterday we stopped again at the park and I am happy to report that a new statue has replaced the old Lucy and this one is a hit!

Isn’t she gorgeous.

There is so much detail in her dress, bag and even pearls. This one captures the essence of Lucy so well. Bravo!

I’m in Love

Have you ever fallen in love with a magazine? In the past when I went to Cape Cod with my sisters I discovered a magazine La Vie Clair. The quality of the magazine was only rivaled by the quality of the paper it was printed on. Just touching it gave me a thrill. The photography was splendid with quotes and articles on living a good, full and rich life. I tried to get every back issue I could and subscribed immediately. Unfortunately that magazine went out of print.

I feel the same way about Southern Lady. Even though I don’t live in the South I was born there and maybe it was my roots or just my love of good recipes and stories that led me to continue my subscription every year.

But today I made a new discovery.

Are you familiar with Bella Grace? I had never seen it before although this is the ninth issue. I was in Michael’s craft store today buying more acrylic paint and noticed it on the magazine stand by the register. Immediately my eye was drawn to the cover.  56 Ways to boost your Mood….Creating Sacred Spaces….23 things it took me 23 years to learn.  I was intrigued. And then I picked it up. It was hefty and the soft cover was thick and textured. Love! It went in my cart.

When I opened the inside it took my breath away. The paper was thick and the photography just lovely. All of the articles were uplifting. The premise of the whole magazine was to create beauty in words and pictures. “We knew there were people out there who would appreciate these tiny but significant parts of our lives, and we knew they wanted to share their own moments.”  The whole magazine is founded on readers sharing their stories and there is a place in the back with submission information. There are quotes from writers:

….and it is interactive with places where you can write in the magazine yourself like a little journal.

Now I will be looking to find out how I can get all eight previous issues. If you love the little things in life you will love this magazine.

Morning light

I love the way the morning sunlight is coming in the east window this morning.

The picture just doesn't do it justice. Our mornings now are very nippy and in the forties. It is time to get out sweaters and light jackets. It warms up to the sixties in the afternoon and is so lovely. Last night I was cool in bed so I think it is time to put on a heavier blanket. I really love this weather now. It won't be long before we have our first frost. Today I will pull out all my summer flowers and put away the pots. Also out summer table needs to be stored. We are in the buttoning up mode. I will leave the swing out as long as possible to sit out and enjoy these last lovely days.

Yesterday I drove to Erie to visit my friend in the hospital who has been through so much and has such struggles. It makes you realize how lucky we are if we can get out of bed in the morning and live a normal life. Afterwards I stopped to shop in a few stores but my heart wasn't in it. I missed shopping with my friend. I have found that lately I don't want to buy anything. This is such a change for me that I am amazed at my actions. I'm even thinking of doing my Christmas shopping online this year. I just want to be home and enjoy what I have without adding anything. Contentment would be the word. I would like one day when I wouldn't have something I had to get done. For a retired gal I sure am busy.

Speaking of busy I had my first Tai Chi class. I LOVED it! We just learned the first two movements out of sixteen. It wasn't as easy as it looked and I stretched muscles I didn't know I had. But it was so serene.

Tonight is the first meeting of my class reunion committee for our 55 th reunion. Since we did it up big five years ago this one ought to go more smoothly.

I am hoping that wherever you are when you are reading this that you enjoy the beautiful day that is in front of you. Every day is such a gift.

Being alive and young

"To feel, and think, and learn...learn always. Surely that is being alive and young in the real sense. " Freda Stark

I admit it. I love learning. As an educator I always got a thrill when a light went off in my students' eye when they grasped a concept or realized a new idea. And I get the same thrill when I can achieve something new. Occasionally I take an Internet course, pursue an interest online, try a new hobby. Anything to keep my mind active.

So when I found out that the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford was offering a continuing education course in Tai Chi I was all in. Now I know very little about Tai Chi. I've seen it done in movies...notably Calendar Girls...one of my favorites by the way. It looked soothing, slow and deliberate. Right up my alley and maybe a good stress reliever. My first class is Monday night.

I am also taking an advanced photography class to enhance my skills. Everything I've learned about my camera has been online. I'd like to have some hands on instruction.

Fun with family and friends

Isn't this metal horse magnificent? On Saturday my sister and I went over to the next town. She and her husband were in town for his fiftieth class reunion. Every time she comes to town it's a tradition to eat at a favorite restaurant The Beef and Barrell which is famous for roast beef sandwiches on kümmel wick rolls along with German potato salad and baked beans. We shopped a little first and then the guys met us for lunch. Afterwards we discovered a little antique store where I found the horse statue.

Rise up

YOU ARE FIRE!! ☀:

What is this? I’m sleeping in. That is so highly unusual that I had to comment on it. I have a sleep pattern. I need lots of sleep so I’m usually in bed by nine watching tv. My usual nighty night time is ten. I drift off comfortably at that time. If I go past it I find it hard to get to sleep. Then between six and seven I wake up refreshed and get up.

Happy Saturday!! I am up before the rest of the family for some 'me' time!! This quote resonated with me because when I set my intentions for the day and I spend time reading first thing in the morning I have a better attitude for the day! So this morning it's personal development first! -you might wake up feeling rusty from the week! You might be exhausted from the grind of your 9-5 being a parent or being the taxi driver to your kids. But remember that when you feel your soul you begin to sweep off the dust and shine again!! Start your day with positive intentions!!

I drift into my morning easily usually checking my email, reading or watching a show I missed the night before. But lately I’ve been unable to get to sleep early, waking up during the night and can’t fall back to sleep or sleeping in way past my getting up time. I feel groggy and it’s  hard to get started in the morning.
...:

When your body gets out of rhythm you look for reasons. So when I woke up with a stuffy nose I knew I had seasonal allergies. It is time to start some medicine. But in my heart I knew it was more than that. My best friend Kay had major surgery yesterday. We thought she was on her way to recovery in a specialty hospital in Erie when her bloodwork went haywire. She had a large hematoma on the wall of her intestine. After surgery she was given a 160% chance of death. But then yesterday a miracle happened. Her bloodwork came good, the sepsis was gone and she opened her eyes. She still isn’t out of the woods but she is holding. Kay is on her fifth life now. She has died four other times and been revived. She is a fighter. So when I can’t sleep I know that is the reason.

This has been an extremely stressful time. With Don, Sadie and Kay I have used up five years worth of worry. Quote on anxiety: I will breathe. I will think of solutions, I will not let my worry control me. I will not let my stress level break me. I will simply breathe. And it will be okay. Because I don't quit. -Shayne McClendon. www.HealthyPlace.com:

Crisp air

I woke to fog this morning. It was cool…not cool enough for a coat or sweater but cool as in refreshing. Even though September is a wonderfully warm month here in western Pennsylvania it begins and ends its days with coolness. We call it good sleeping weather.

I love when the pumpkins come out. Yes, there are still summer flowers blooming and I don’t have the heart to dump the pots yet. Let their blooms continue as long as they want. Soon we will have our first frost and they will be gone. But I couldn’t resist getting fall decorations out on the porch. IMG_6652

Our breezeway and courtyard look so nice since the boys did all the work on them.

“Traveling is all very well if you can get home at night. I would be willing to go around the world if I came back in time to light the candles and set the table for supper.I cannot conceivably influence the world's destiny, but I can make my own life more worthwhile. I can give some help to some people; that is not vital to all the world's problems and yet I think if everyone did just that, we might see quite a world in our time!”
