PICNIC ON THE LAKE

Last Friday my friend Cece and I took a picnic lunch with us and ate at a picnic table under a large weeping willow by Chautauqua Lake. This steamboat, the Chautauqua Belle, gives rides on the lake. It is glorious to hear the steamboat whistling as it is pulling out.

I brought along a little vintage tablecloth and used my new but looks old plaid lunch box. Food always tastes better eaten outdoors.

Doesn’t this lighthouse make the best setting for a picnic?

BRADFORD GARDEN TOUR 2018

This spectacular garden was one of those I toured today on the Garden Walk. Mr. O’Brian has spent many years developing the layout of the garden even to the point of buying the house next door and tearing it down to provide more area for flowers.

This is the front years which welcomes you right away onto the property.

Down the side of the house this brick pathway leads you under the arch and into the back yard.

The backyard has a variety of annuals and perennials which delight the eye.

Little paths lead you through the garden which if filled with statuary and garden objects to delight the eye.

There were thousands of annuals such as impatiens and petunias.

Here is a picture of the garden in the evening. The O’Briens like to entertain at night in the summer to enjoy every part of their remarkable garden.

ART IN THE GARDEN

On Friday before my art class Cece and I went to a craft show in Westfield, NY. This annual show is sponsored by the YWCA and is held in the town square park. The crafts were above average and I found this metal hummingbird sculpture to add to my garden.

I love metal sculptures as you can see. This flower came from TJ Max a few years ago. You can tell I love metal from the window box that Don made for me.

This little flower girl was found at a consignment shop.

Poor Don. He carried this heavy cement bunny around at flea market for me one time.

You can see the cement pineapple behind the wire trellis added to this flower container.

And Tatiana’s feelings would be hurt if I didn’t include her in my list of garden sculptures. Can you observe that tiny yellow squash growing in the planter to the left?

This picture shows the cranes, the metal ball and the copper watering sculpture as well as the Wirlygig.

You can tell I love art in my garden.

Oh my

Oh my...have I almost forgotten to blog today? Can it be I have been much too busy?

Running up and down the basement steps
Taking things to the garage to be disposed of
Sorting through boxes finding more items for the garage sale
Sweeping
Organizing
Making room downstairs for my Christmas decorations
Which have to be moved from the attic
Did I mention it looks like a space station up there
With long tubes all over everywhere
And
In between while I was taking a break
I’m binge watching
Orange is the new black
And nursing my sick husband who has a cold

No time to blog?
No wonder

How does your garden grow?

I believe these are called balloon flowers. I added this perennial to my garden last year.

The impatiens are doing very well.

And the brown eyed Susans always put on a show in July.

What has surprised me the most however is how large this hydrangea is growing in its pot. It is twice the size of the ones I have in the ground which makes me wonder if I should transplant them. How do I get this one to bloom again? I recently fed everyone with Miracle Grow so we will see.

Today I am off to Mayville again with Cecelia, my art partner from class. This week we are painting Monet and also going to a craft show in Westfield. I haven’t been to a craft show in years so it ought to be fun.

Rave on

Tuesday night I attended another great event by the Bradford Creative and Performing Arts group. They have a summer series which features artist impersonators. This time it was Buddy Holly. RIght from the start it captured my heart. The back up band played Chantilly Lace by the Big Bopper and Runaround Sue by Dion to honor those who were on tour with Buddy just before that fatal plane crash. Then Buddy Holly came out and for an hour and a half solid performed songs and told stories that had me right back into the fifties. He was working up a sweat as he pretended to be Buddy transported into modern times. It was a delightful performance and had me dancing in my seat. But a big surprise came at the end of the concert when he left the stage. The band continued to play a few songs and then he came out again dressed like Richie Valens and tore the house down with La Bamba and Donna. We are so lucky to have such an active group that brings top notch entertainment to our small town.

Welcome to Chatham Lane

IMG_1670

I painted this tray many years ago to welcome all to my home. This year it hangs on the picket fence.

IMG_1671
The hostas are in full bloom now. Two things about hostas…they are easy to grow and they grow without any trouble. That makes them the perfect plant for me.

IMG_1669
This is the way to enter my house if you want.

IMG_1672

Remember a few weeks ago when I trimmed this vine? yeah…it needs it again.

IMG_1678
The day lilies by Tatiana are doing just fine this year. In the planters in front of her I am growing yellow squash and zucchini.

All my flowers are having a second birth and doing well.

jack Russels

This is a repost from a long time ago but when I came across it I just had to share.

Warning:  If you are thinking about buying a Jack Russell Terrier there are a few things you should know.

1. When people roll their eyes and say, “Oh, no” when you mention that you are thinking of getting a Jack Russell, believe that they know something you don’t know.
sadie 018

2. Under that puppy cuteness and loveability lies a creature that will give you unwavering loyalty and attention . (most of the time this would be a good thing, but let me give you an example. )linda niagara on the lake 10.11 029 Me, very quietly reading the paper when Sadie jumped up on my lap. linda niagara on the lake 10.11 031 Sadie is pushing against me trying to vie for my attention. linda niagara on the lake 10.11 033 All she wants is attention, you say. Yes, of course she does, she’s a Jack Russell. She wants my attention 24/7. She wants to know where I am at all times, what I am doing, and how she can get all of my attention at any given moment.

3. If you can survive the first two years of having a Jack Russell you will be rewarded with an intelligent, strong willed, loving dog. But there will be times during the first few years when you wonder if it’s going to be you or the dog. Let me give you an example. sadie at the fountian 015 Jack Russells like to chew. more sadie 007
and chew…..bad sadie 003
and chew!

4. Jack Russell like to be dominant. They are called little Napoleons. They like to sit higher than you on the back of the couch and be assertive in their behavior. Let me give you an example:sadie and kitty 005
snow is melting 3.11 376 syrup 3.11 002

5. If you are not around Jack Russells will resort to being pals with other animals or small children. cat and dogjuly 4.11 006

6.  Jack Russells love to be active. Plan on going for long walks and playing with you dog a lot. sadie in winter 010 sadie and the snow 003

7. jack Russells are very curious. They will sit and watch for hours to spy a squirrel.

8. Jack Russells love the water. It is prudent to put a life jacket on them because they will swim for hours as long as someone is in the water.

9. When you are gone, your dog will miss you, pine for you, and empty out your trash cans. 7.11 sadie and top gun 003
10.  Your dog will become part of you family and want to be around you all the time…even when you go to the bathroom. It is common for a Jack Russell to burrow under the covers in your bed at night. sadie in bed 002 This lump is Sadie. She didn’t want to get up in the morning and Don made the bed anyway.
11. If you don’t think you need to crate a Jack Russell, you haven’t owned a Jack Russell. sadie in crate 001
12. Jack Russells can harm themselves. Let me give you an example. They will sneak away and chew anything…electric razors, your eyeglasses, tissues, any small thing that you thought was in the trash, and food of any kind. You will find that having a Jack Russell is like having a two year old in your house. You learn to get wastebaskets with lids, put away everything high up where she can’t reach, and keep an eye on her at all times. sadie 008 13.  But no matter what a Jack Russell can give you love….with no strings attached. She can be there for you, cuddle you, and warm your heart. She is a wonderful companion and devoted friend. That is why people have Jack Russells. If it wasn’t for that the breed would have been eliminated a long time ago for being just too much trouble.
