Life’s little troubles

Ice in the refrigerator......has it ever happened to you?  Don is thawing it out with a hair dryer. Let’s hope I just blocked one of the vents.

When this happened to my side by side freezer/refrigerator, a little internet research saved me a whole bundle of money (retired teacher also). I emptied everything from both the freezer and refrigerator into coolers, left both doors open and started mopping up as the ice inside the wall melted. Sometimes I put a pot of hot water on a shelf and shut the door to contain the heat. I left them open for a good 24 hours just to make sure I got rid of all the ice inside the wall separating the freezer from the refrigerator. Then I made sure that nothing blocked those little vents that allowed the air to circulate from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment. No more stacking food against the walls. At least I learned something: Only the air inside the freezer is actually made cold by the compressor. The air inside the refrigerator compartment is cool because it passively flows from the freezer to the refrigerator, voila, cold milk! Thanks for your sweet blog, sometimes it's nice to read about nice easy family days.

  2. Oh dear! That's not supposed to happen with today's fridges, is it? That used to be such a dreaded task for me, back in the 1960s. Defrosting the fridge, I don't want to go back to those days!
