Leaves

november 2015 039

Not many left…the trees are almost bare now. Another season is coming..the white one. november 2015 044

"How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow."
-   Elsie N. Brady, Leaves

The bear came for a visit last week and broke down the fence in two places..one in and one out. We put up the fence five years ago to keep Sadie safe and it has been broken about four times since. There used to be a bear highway which took them right down to our backyard and through between the house and the breezeway. We hoped that the fence would stop them but it took a while for them to learn a new route around the garage. We have not fed the birds yet in the hopes that by the time we do they will be hibernating. I miss seeing the birds in the morning but after he tore apart our gazebo bird feeder we can’t take the chance. There have never been any instances of a bear attacking people but I do know people that have had a bear break into their house while they were not home. They are searching right now for food. You can see in this picture where he left the yard. november 2015 045

  1. Dare I say this......????

There was a Bear Path, right in that area. Then a builder came, and bought the land, and built houses there. So, actually, the bears had first call on this path land, yes?

Did the builder tell you, that you were having him build, right on the Bear Path??????

And if he did, you built anyway. So you knew what you were getting in for.

You knew that bears has used that land, for who knows how long..... Way before you arrived....

    Dare I ask these questions....?

  2. First of all we didn't build this house. It was built in the fifties. Second, we lived here many years without any trouble with bears. The bear problem has been because of the growing bear population and development. They are searching for food which brings them into populated areas. It is not our fault that bears decided where to walk. We are not the only neighborhood in Bradford to have bears that visit and occasionally cause damage.

  3. sad that there's not enough food source for them.
their very survival depends on it.
but i wouldn't want them quite so close!

  4. You didn't build it. thank you.

You haven't had bear problems in years. Wonder why it is called a Bear Highway then...?

Growing bear population issue....... Is there a hunting season for bears?

Human Development...... Yes, here is the issue. Humans continue to populate too. And since humans have the big machines, they can keep on digging and developing the land, which was always wild. Same here. Where we grew up with country side, now it is populated. Will there be any country side left??? And wild woods left????

And around here, the homes built are super homes. McMansions. cutting into much more of the natural wild land, than your and my houses would ever do. These people have the money. They want super homes. They want to look like kings in their castles, with land around them. It is really kind of ...... Well, yeah... Not for me to say.

    Thank you....

And if you want to delete this exchange in comments here, do so. Really, do so.

    Gentle hugs,
    Tessa

    1. I called it a bear highway as a joke. We used to not have a bear problem for years..now we occasionally do. Yes, there is a bear season. Also they set traps and relocate them. There really is not enough development here to bother the bears we have huge hills and forests so there is plenty of room for them. But they take a liking to the bird seed or deer food that people put out so have become lazy at finding their own. Long ago there were open dumps where the bears could gather and eat their fill on was in the New York State park near our house. I remember as a child watching them from the safety of our car.

  5. And....where Peggy and I live, way out West Washington, we are surrounded by the woods. We have all sorts of critters visiting through our yards. Bears come when they wake up and they come before hibernating.
